It’s finally October, and as the weather cooled down, I was looking for a cozy mystery that isn’t too scary, but still has a few twists.
Mark Pryor has experience in prosecution and criminal defense, so he has some firsthand knowledge of how things work in solving crimes!
Hugo Marston has officially retired from his FBI and Head of Security gig and is ready to settle into his now quiet life of owning a Mystery & Antiquarian Bookshop in Paris. Or so he thought! When a blackmail note appears overnight at an upscale chocolate factory in a secluded area of Paris demanding money or the factory’s biggest secret will be made public, the U.S. Embassy asks Hugo to suit up and help solve the mystery. As Hugo begins investigating, the owner of the factory suggests what the secret is, but Hugo is unsure that it could really lead to blackmail. When a new note, rescinding the previous blackmail threat arrives the very next night, Hugo is relieved his job is over as quickly as it began. However, the staff is still rattled and unsure the problem is resolved. Before Hugo can even hail a taxi to head home, a beloved employee is found murdered in the back garden! Are the notes and the murder even related? Is the current owner of the chocolate factory telling the truth about what the big secret might be? Why would anyone even care this much about some chocolate? Finally, will Hugo ever get to retire and open his quiet little bookstore?
