The performance serves as a tribute to the original Ponca Playhouse production of 1776, which was presented in 1976 as part of Ponca City’s celebration of the nation’s bicentennial. Fifty years later, as communities across the country commemorate America’s 250th birthday, local performers and musicians will once again bring this patriotic classic to life for a new generation.
Unlike a traditional fully staged production, a staged reading places the emphasis on the script, music, and performances, allowing audiences to focus on the story and characters that shaped the birth of the United States. Accompanied by a live orchestra, the evening promises to blend powerful music with an important chapter of American history.
First premiering on Broadway in 1969, 1776 features music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone. The musical follows the efforts of John Adams and his fellow delegates in the Second Continental Congress as they debate and ultimately vote for American independence. Through memorable songs, humor, and historical drama, the production explores the challenges, disagreements, and compromises that led to the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
The musical quickly became a Broadway success, earning multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Its popularity led to a 1972 film adaptation featuring many members of the original Broadway cast. Over the decades, 1776 has remained a favorite among community theaters, schools, and professional companies for its unique ability to make history engaging and accessible.
For Ponca City residents, the upcoming performance carries special significance. The original 1976 production was part of an extraordinary year of community celebration. During the nation’s bicentennial, Ponca City hosted numerous projects and events designed to honor America’s heritage while highlighting the city’s own history and growth. That same year saw the opening of the Marland Mansion to the public, the dedication of Kaw Dam, the establishment of the Lester and Mary Cann Memorial Gardens, and the placement of a community time capsule at the Marland Mansion scheduled to be opened in 2026.
The return of 1776 offers an opportunity to reflect on that remarkable bicentennial year while celebrating the nation’s semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of American independence. Much like 1976, Ponca City is once again embracing a season of patriotic events and community gatherings that recognize both local heritage and the enduring ideals upon which the country was founded.
The historic Poncan Theatre provides a fitting venue for this commemorative performance. As one of Ponca City’s most treasured cultural landmarks, the theater has long served as a gathering place for community entertainment, artistic expression, and civic celebration.
As Independence Day weekend begins, audiences will have the chance to experience a production that connects the past and present through music, storytelling, and history. By revisiting the same musical that helped commemorate America’s 200th birthday in 1976, the Ponca Playhouse is helping preserve a cherished piece of local history while celebrating the nation’s 250-year journey.
This staged reading is part of the official "Ponca City Great American City: America 250" city-wide celebration. For more information on this or other events in Ponca City celebrating America's 250th, visit www.visitponcacity.com/250
