I just want to start by stating that some of my favorite people are redheads. My husband, my mother-in-law, my boss, all redheads, and all fantastic, fabulous people. So this story is not a knock at all on our fair, SPF-carrying friends. This is just one of my all-time favorite memories with my oldest daughter, who had a life-changing realization while on the way to school a few years ago. I hope you get as big of a kick out of it as I did! So here goes:
A few years ago, my daughter and I were just chatting on the way to school, mostly about the same things we always talk about, wondering what will be served for lunch, what will be played in P.E., etc., etc. We pull into the parking lot, and I begin helping her out of the car when all of a sudden, and out of nowhere she comes to a complete stop and says “Mom, you have black hair and my dad has red hair!?” I respond quizzically with “Yes, that’s true?” She then turned to look me square in the eye and said “Oh my God! I’m a half-ginger aren’t I!?” I just about busted a gut, but could only squeak out “Yes honey, I guess you are.” And from then on she has affectionately been referred to as our “little half-ginger”.
