Although it’s a new year, some traditions are worth keeping. And what’s a New Year’s celebration without some bubbly? While champagne and prosecco are delightful on their own, it’s fun to add a little pizzazz to your glass. If you’re a peach lover like me, the Bellini is for you! It’s as easy to make as heating up ramen noodles and packs a punch with my favorite fruit flavor.
Let’s peel back the layers of time and step into the enchanting world of Harry’s Bar in the 1930s. Established in 1931 by the visionary Giuseppe Cipriani Sr. in Venice, Italy, this cozy venue became a magnet for the crème de la crème of society. The air was alive with the chatter of writers penning their next masterpiece, painters finding inspiration in every corner and aristocrats mingling with kings and queens. In the heart of post-war glamour, as Venice ruled the socialite scene, Harry’s Bar became a vibrant canvas where the city’s cultural elements mixed seamlessly.
The proprietor and bartender created a cocktail that would become an iconic symbol of elegance and taste. The Bellini is more than just a drink; it’s an homage to the artistic legacy of Giovanni Bellini. Cipriani named this cocktail as a nod to the renowned Italian Renaissance painter and his beautiful color palette.
Authentic Italian Bellinis are made with white peaches, but they can be tough to come by throughout the year. Fortunately, you can easily substitute with peach nectar or yellow peaches, fresh or frozen. For optimal taste, chill the peach puree in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. If using frozen peaches, throw those suckers in the food processor, and they’re ready to go.
If you happen to find yourself in Venice, stop in Harry’s Bar, but if you order a Bellini, it will set you back about 25 bucks. Yikes! Not a peach lover? Your loss! If you don’t believe in the power of peaches, remember the wise words of the Presidents of the United States: “Millions of peaches, peaches for free. Millions of peaches, peaches for me.” Imagine a world where fresh and abundant produce is free. That’s the kind of world I want to live in.
