It's the start of a new month, and you know what that means—fresh off the press and full of good stuff, the May issue of Ponca City Monthly is here! Ponca City Monthly Publisher and Editor in Chief Kelsey Wagner and I sat down to chat about everything you'll find in this one. Let me tell you, it's a fun one.
First up is the cover story. This month, we're spotlighting something truly special: the Ponca City Passport. The latest Leadership Ponca City class dreamed up this project, and it's basically a love letter to our town. The idea is simple—explore local gems like museums, shops, and historic spots, collect stamps like you're globetrotting, and earn some cool prizes along the way. It's part scavenger hunt, part community challenge, and 100% fun. Whether you've lived here forever or you're just now getting your bearings, it's a fantastic way to (re)discover Ponca City.
We're also featuring two businesses in the spotlight this month. First up is Frocks & Fashions, which, if you've ever gone to prom or planned a wedding around here, you probably know well. Roxanna has totally remodeled the space, and the selection—from prom dresses to mother-of-the-bride gowns—is stunning. Then there's Dandelane Boutique, a charming little shop. This is a story that hits you right in the feels. It's deeply personal, beautifully curated, and well worth a visit.
Another standout piece this month is about the Kay County Sheriff's Office. We discuss jurisdiction, the inner workings of the jail, and even their canine officer, Max. It's a fascinating look behind the badge and a reminder of the people doing important work we don't always see.
We also preview a major event coming up on May 16: Pioneer Tech's Business and Industry BBQ. This gathering brings together small business owners, educators, and industry folks to connect, share ideas, and build a stronger community. If you've never been, put it on your calendar.
And, of course, our regular monthly columns are back. "Learning with Leaming" offers his heartfelt reflections for the graduating class, while Jeff MacKinnon's "Real Encounters" takes a hilarious (and maybe too relatable) look at sharing an office. He'll be on the podcast in a couple of weeks to discuss his adventures.
Now, let's talk about some of the exciting events featured in this month's issue—including a few big ones coming up in June that you'll definitely want on your radar. First up, the Ponca City Rodeo is just around the corner. It drew over 17,000 people last year and shows no signs of slowing down. From high-caliber rodeo action to major musical acts, it's easily one of the biggest events in the region. Also coming in June: the always-beloved Herb Festival at Cann Gardens. It's a fundraiser for the Survivor Resource Network and one of the most charming ways to spend a morning—sipping coffee, shopping local art, and loading up on fresh plants in one of Ponca's prettiest spots.
But don't skip past May! There's plenty happening right now—especially on May 3rd, which is absolutely stacked. From the Northern Oklahoma Humane Society Poker Run to Croquet & Rosé and what feels like 87 other things, you've got options. (Pro tip: Croquet is moving indoors due to rain, but the rosé is still flowing.) And right behind all that is the American Portraits concert at the Poncan Theatre on May 16th. This nationally touring duo is stopping in Ponca on their documentary-making tour, and yes—it's free. Just because it doesn't cost a dime doesn't mean it's not world-class. Don't miss your chance to be part of something truly special.
And before I forget—Mother's Day is around the corner. We've got gorgeous floral advertisements from Busy Bee Flowers and Gifts and Waymakers Floral featured in this issue, and they never disappoint. Honestly, treat your mom and your bathroom. Fresh flowers = instant luxury.
One quick logistical note: if you're looking for the magazine rack in front of the post office, it's getting moved to right outside our office. Still plenty of places to grab a copy, but that's the new home base.
All in all, May is shaping up to be a big, bright, community-filled month—and this issue reflects that energy. We'll be back next week with the folks behind the Ponca Passport to dig even deeper. Until then, happy exploring!
