(FREE) Sunny Dayz Series: Meet the Artists - Theresa Sacket
Article and Interview by Morgan Murphy / Ponca City Monthly Intern
Theresa Sacket, Sunny Dayz Mural Festival Artist - May 29, 2024
Where did you get that cool hat?
Paige Winslow with A Plus Printing made hats for all the artists on the wall! Isn't that cool?
What been your biggest struggle during Sunny Dayz?
My biggest struggle during sunny days is actually working instead of talking to all the cool people that are here, because all I wanna do is mix and mingle and get to know all the rad people that are in my community right now. And so, delegating my time where I'm actually getting in all the work I need to do. And also forming quality relationships with everyone here has been the biggest like, struggle. So I'm trying to make it all happen.
What inspired you to do this bison?
So, I hadn't done a bison yet. I've been wanting to for a while, and I really like doing animals. And this past year I've also been trying to challenge myself to transition into doing more spray paint murals. I really wanted to do something that had lots of layers and fur and different elements to it, but also slightly abstract. Since we have a week turnaround on these murals, I wanted something that had some abstract colors to it so I had some more freedom, so I could just more intuitively place colors in parts of it as well.
I also named this one, “Té Oda,” which is the Ponca word for bison beauty. They actually don't have a word for beauty in the Ponca language, but it means “bison, it is good.” A lot of my murals in the past kind of have a nod to our community and our culture and things I've done. So I wanted to stay with that theme slightly with this piece as well.
What has been your biggest biggest struggle in life?
Theresa: (Pauses) I think my biggest struggle in life has been the loss of my brother.
(Pauses) So, like from 2019 to 2021, my family was living abroad, and we were loving that life. And then, you know, my brother, we lost him, and that’s what brought us back to Ponca City. But that also opened up all these awesome opportunities in the arts with murals and stuff. So yeah. It's a tragedy that brought me back. But lots of beautiful things have come from being back.
