(FREE) First Christian Church launching, "Community Learning Seminars"
ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Seminars aim to foster personal growth and connection in Ponca City
In an effort to promote personal growth, community connection, and positive communication, First Christian Church has announced a series of Community Learning Seminars set to kick off this month. These sessions are designed to address significant issues prevalent in the community and will run consecutively for 2-4 weeks, offering attendees a chance to delve deep into these thought-provoking topics.
“The seminar addresses important issues we all face but are not talking about. The issues are certainly there but it seems we tend to ignore them or just put them out of our mind,” said Stan Brown, one of the coordinators of the seminar.
“One of our previous ministers told us to always take care of ourselves and to take care of our community. First Christian helps the community in several ways. We sponsor Friendship Feast, we do the Community Garden, and a number of other programs. This is just another program that hopefully addresses those who are interested in deeper topics as well as those who need and want to be more involved with others.”
When asked what inspired the church to hold these seminars, Brown said, “A Sunday School class came up with the idea for the seminars. They wanted something meaningful but not something that forced a particular view of religion on those participating. In other words, good for everyone in the community.”
On why these seminars are needed for our city, Brown said, “I’m not sure our city “needs” these topics but they will serve to make us more knowledgeable and aware citizens. We can use these sessions to grow and be more fulfilled in our everyday lives, and that helps the community.”
Dates and Sign-Up Information All seminars will take place at First Christian Church, located at 210 North 5th Street in Ponca City. Attendees are encouraged to enter the building through the west door. For more information and to register for these seminars, interested individuals can contact the church office at 580-762-1667.
SEMINAR TOPICS
SEEING EACH OTHER: The Art of True Connection The series commences with "Seeing Each Other," a seminar focused on the art of true connection. In a world where understanding people and appreciating their situations can often be challenging, these sessions aim to shed light on the importance of looking beyond surface judgments. The ability to make another person feel seen and understood is a profound skill that these seminars will explore, providing attendees with tools to forge deeper connections in their lives. The basis for this session is the enlightening book "How To Know A Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen" by David Brooks.
ON BEING HAPPIER!: Exploring the Science of Happiness Following "Seeing Each Other," the series will dive into the science of happiness with "On Being Happier!" These sessions will guide participants on a journey to understand the concept of happiness and how to attain more of it in their lives. The exploration begins within, examining personal feelings, and then expands to encompass family, friendships, work, and spirituality. Attendees will be equipped with valuable tools to lead happier lives and uplift those around them. The basis for this session is the engaging book "Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier" by Arthur Brooks and Oprah Winfrey.
SAY WHAT YOU MEAN: Bridging the Gap with Nonviolent Communication In a world marked by divisive language and actions, the final segment of the seminar series, "Say What You Mean," aims to bridge the communication gap. Attendees will learn and practice a series of essential steps for establishing positive communication, particularly in discussions about sensitive issues. These sessions provide a foundation for expressing love and compassion while fostering understanding among individuals. The basis for this session is the insightful book "Say What You Mean: A Mindful Approach to Nonviolent Communication: How to Find Your Voice, Speak Your Truth & Listen Deeply" by Oren Jay Sofer.
The first session, "Seeing Each Other," is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, January 16, at 4:00 pm, with "On Being Happier!" and "Say What You Mean" following in consecutive weeks.
