America’s Founding Myths…and What Really Happened

America’s Founding Myths…and What Really Happened

by Christy Mihaly

Take a deep dive into American history and the myths that were created to build a stronger image of our growing nation in the eyes of newcomers. As immigrants arrived from across the ocean, Americans worried about the future of the new nation. So, a story that combined tales of explorers, Pilgrims, rebellious colonists, and wise Founding Fathers into one larger than life myth was born.

Throughout this book, Christy Mihaly tells readers about these famous myths and then explains what really happened. I loved how readers are able to read a flap with the myth on it, open the flap to uncover the truth, and then check the back of the flap to see how the myth came to be.

Filled with historical events primarily taught in elementary and middle school, the book corrects the things we readers thought we already knew. The target audience for this book is primarily young adults and children in middle school, but older readers will also enjoy learning about these American myths. I know I did!

As we begin to celebrate America on her 250th birthday, we should always remember the history of our nation. With such a diverse history, there is still much to learn about our country and its citizens, especially now. Lest we forget, America is great because it is filled with people who believe in what our country can stand for, but also what it should stand for—opportunity and hope for everyone.
